WHO IS GIBELA?

Gibela, which came to existance in year 2013 is a product of South Africa's black empowerment policy in it was born out of a merger between a French company called Alstom and local rail company called Ubumbano. 

The South African government awarded Gibela a contract of six hundred million to make 600 trains for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa popularly known as PRASA. This awarded contract by the state requires that Gibela performs train maintenance, provide support on technical issues and source spares when needed.


What Does Gibela Bursary Entail?

The bursary award by Gibela is targeting students who want to further their tertiary education studies in local institutions that offer courses that are prescribed by the company. This is done so that upon completion, bursary recipients may be absorbed by the company where there may be employment opportunities.

Applicants must preferably come from the group falling under what is termed as previously disadvantaged in South Africa. They should be able to demonstrate that they can achieve excellent academic performance in their tertiary studies.

ELIGIBILITY 

  • Applicants must have passed their Grade 12 with exemption in Science, Maths and Accounting at Level 6, and English language at Level 5
  • Provide proof that you have been accepted for admission to a South African university or university of technology
  • Must a South African citizen
The Gibela bursary award is for the period of 12 month but recipients must renew by submitting their results at the end of each year.
